HOW CAN I HELP?

THE 52ND STREET PROJECT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

THE SHOWS

  • Skilled theater professionals: If you are an experienced costume designer, sound designer, lighting designer, or stage manager, then, boy, you are as good as gold to us.
  • Backstage crews: Every show needs a running crew: people that can rush props and furniture on for scene changes as well as play the occasional walk-on. This job is actually quite fun and gives you the opportunity to mingle with the kids and see how our shows come together. Since production week runs from Tuesday to Sunday, the time commitment is brief but intense, consisting of a week’s worth of evenings and the better part of Saturday and Sunday on any given production.
  • Artwork: As you may know, all our props are drawn on foam core with magic markers. We need artists to do bold and witty original sketches and folks who can stay within the lines to color them in. Our “Prop Parties” (free coffee and bagels) are always on Saturdays or Sundays, but other times can be arranged for individuals. Artists are also needed to help us create background projections, flyers, and brochures.
  • Acting, directing, and writing: These are the most coveted of the Project’s volunteer jobs. They are fun and highly rewarding, but they carry a high degree of responsibility. As a result, the artistic staff assigns these roles very carefully to people we know and trust. If you are interested in volunteering on the artistic level, we suggest letting us get to know you by doing some other vol gigs first.

EDUCATIONAL

  • Playmaking Classes: three courses in basic and advanced playwriting for kids. We use adults to help out in the classes. This is a plum gig! (plums not included) Tuesdays from 4:00 to 5:30 in the Fall and Winter.
  • Homework Help: Got time in the afternoon between 3:00 and 5:00? Spend some if it helping whoever needs assistance with their homework that day. Expertise in any given school subject, not necessary, we can help you help them figure it out.
  • Smart Partners: For a more serious commitment, become one particular kid’s mentor for a school year. This will take a minimum of 90 minutes a week.

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Mailings: From time to time we need help stuffing, stamping and sealing envelopes for our big mailings. These generally happen beginning in the morning and lasting until the job is complete — sometimes late in the afternoon.
