Two-On-Two

@ 1:20 pm

This program is designed to give the older Project kids a new performing challenge. By the time they’ve reached this program, they know their way around the stage well enough to share the responsibilities of driving a play without an adult on stage. Each kid is partnered with another kid. The two are, in turn, matched up with a pair of adults: a playwright and a director. Although the adult mentors are always present in the wings, Project kids learn to rely on, and support, one another on stage for the first time. After a week or so of working on the plays in the city, the group goes to the country for a three-day weekend of concentrated rehearsal and out-of-town fun. As in most other Project programs, the Two-on-Two’s end with a full production in our Five Angels Theater.

From ROCKET BOYS by Don Nguyen for Emmett Goodman-Boyd and Marcus Quinones:

FRANKY
Whoa. Space.
Franky lets his arms float.

BARRY
We should go over our transmitter checklist.
The checklist floats into Franky’s hands.

FRANKY
Okay. Go.

BARRY
Transmitter.
Franky looks around.
Transmitter?

FRANKY
Umm…I think we forgot it.

BARRY
You forgot the transmitter…on the transmitter checklist?

FRANKY
There’s just so many things to keep track of!

BARRY
That was the only thing on our list! You were supposed to bring it!

FRANKY
Why not you?

BARRY
Because I’m in charge.

FRANKY
What, because you downloaded plans off of build-your-own-rocket-out-of-everyday-household-items.com you think you’re a rocket scientist now? You’re still an unemployed accountant.

BARRY
Yeah, and you’re just…unemployed. I don’t even know what you do anymore.

FRANKY
I’m diverse in my services. I offer a little bit of everything for everyone. Like a buffet.

BARRY
It doesn’t matter what we are because without that transmitter, we can’t get back home! I’m gonna have to land this ship.

FRANKY
Where?

BARRY
(Pointing out of the cockpit.) There.
Barry turns some dials. They both brace themselves.

FRANKY
What, the Moon?

BARRY
Look, I don’t want to go to the stupid Moon, but we have no choice.

FRANKY
I don’t mind the Moon, why do you?

BARRY
Because we’ve already been there.

FRANKY
No we haven’t.

BARRY
I mean we as in Man. Man has already been there. There’s nothing new about it.

FRANKY
It’ll be new to us.

BARRY
(To himself) I’m tired of following in everyone’s footsteps.
